Key findings

What does the codex say about the megatrends shaping the future?

  1. The codex describes a VUCA-MAX world: on top of being volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, change is now Massive, Accelerating and Exponential, which makes disruption harder than ever to predict.
  2. Technology-led disruption is destroying over $50 trillion of global GDP, while ARK Invest expects disruptive technologies to create over $200 trillion of new value. More than 65% of big cap organisations now run Creative Destruction programmes.
  3. Citing PwC's 27th Annual Global CEO Survey of over 4,700 CEOs, the codex notes that 45% believe their companies will not survive the next ten years without being reinvented.
  4. McKinsey's leadership surveys show CEOs directly influence only 45% of what happens to their organisations. The other 55% is driven by external forces such as consumer behaviour, regulation, market forces and technological disruption.
  5. Every trend sheet rates priority, momentum (ascending, flat or descending), timing (here now, emerging or distant) and longevity, names the UN SDG it most affects, lists related trends and ends with a recommended action.

Questions and answers

Questions people ask about technology trends and megatrends

What are megatrends?

Megatrends are powerful, transformative forces, backed by observable and verifiable data, that shape the future of global business, culture and society. The codex compares them to the ocean: a large force moving in one direction, while smaller microtrends act like currents and eddies that decide where you finally land. The automobile, electricity and the internet are classic examples.

What are the biggest technology trends shaping the future?

The codex's technological trends section covers artificial intelligence, creative machines, robotics, synthetic biology, the Internet of Things, blockchain, tokenisation, immersive reality and general purpose technologies. It also tracks wider forces such as the accelerating rate of change, technological decoupling and the standards shadow war, and cross-links each trend to the others it affects.

How are future trends categorised?

The codex sorts trends three ways: STEEP trends (societal, technological, economic, environmental and political), universal line of business trends such as workforce, security and supply chain, and sector specific trends for industries from aerospace to telecoms. STEEP and most line of business trends affect everyone in similar ways, while sector trends hit some industries much harder than others.

How can organisations turn trends into strategy?

The codex includes three strategic foresight programmes, Horizon Lite, Horizon Pro and Horizon Elite, which take teams through programme prep, future framing, futures research, futures scenarios and future strategy. 311 Institute also runs keynote sessions, executive briefings and foresight workshops that help leadership teams apply these trends to their own organisation and sector.

Who wrote the Annual Trends and Foresight Codex?

Matthew Griffin, Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, wrote the codex as part of his Codex of the Future series. The 311 Institute is a global futures and deep futures advisory that looks up to 50 years out and works with brands, governments, investors and NGOs to explore and shape the future.

THIS CODEX and its companion Codex, the 311 Institute Exponential Technology Codex, which explores the future and deep future and all of the exponential technologies listed on our Starbursts in greater detail, is your front row seat to the future.

In the past twenty years humanity has made more technological progress than we did in the previous five hundred, and in the next thirty years we will make more progress than we did in the previous twenty thousand, a staggering achievement by any measure. And all of tomorrow’s new industries, products and services, will have their foundations in the technologies we are developing today, many of which, like Artificial Intelligence, will be as revolutionary as the invention of electricity and fire.

As the rate of change accelerates, in some areas at what seems like breakneck speed, our ability to track all the developments and their downstream implications will continue to become more challenging. That’s what drove me to create the Starbursts in this Codex, and the Codex of the Future Series, a set of living Codices that I hope will become a single point of reference for people who want to see what the future holds for us all.

Today just under half of the world’s population is connected, and while that figure will continue to tick upwards over the next decade, for those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to tap into its democratising power, technology is giving us all the ability to transform our lives, and the lives of everyone around us, in ways that very few people could imagine less than two generations ago, let alone fifty years ago. And if we have come this far in just fifty years, then just imagine what the next fifty holds...

Today is the slowest that we’ll move ever again, and while the future holds great promise it’s important to remember we are all just caretakers in time, and that each of us has the responsibility, and the power, to safeguard and improve not just our lives and the lives of everyone on our blue planet, but also the lives and livelihoods of future generations.

Together we can change the world, and, as we create our legacy, the legacy of a better future, we owe it to each other to make sure noone is left behind. My sincerest regards to you all,
